The vasculitides have traditionally been classified by their broad pattern of clinical features, including size and type of vessel involvement, or by their histopathological features, such as the character of the inflammatory infiltrate. However, recent advances in our understanding of immunopathogenic mechanisms may offer additional classification and diagnostic tools.
